We live on an island, we’re
surrounded by water and Manchester is the rainiest city in
Europe.
We don’t need to worry about how much we use, right?
Wrong!
Only 1% of the Earth’s water
supply is fresh water, and that water has to be processed,
consuming electricity and contributing to global warming.
Overstretched water treatment facilities end up dumping raw
sewage straight into rivers and seas.
- A human being only needs seven cups of water
a day to survive, but in this country we get through an
average of 140 litres a day each
- A five minute shower uses 8.5 litres of water.
Flushing a toilet uses 9 litres of water. A dishwasher uses
20 litres per cycle.
- It takes 30 litres to fill a bath 8 inches
deep. Cleaning your car with a hose for half an hour takes
264 litres. Producing 4 car tyres uses 160,000 litres of
water.
Meanwhile, 40% of the world’s population
has no access to clean drinking water and fifteen million
under-fives die every year from water-borne diseases and pollution.
